Fox went out in the pale moonlight O

Learn the name of different instruments in this cat and mouse type game.

Make a circle holding hands. One child is chosen to be the fox standing in the circle and they choose an instrument to play.

Fox went out in the pale moonlight,

Yes he did, yes he did.

And he played as he sang, it was charming,

Yes, he sang disarmingly.

“Little chickens, dearest chickens,

Oh my sweet and dearest chickens,

Come and dance with me.”

The hens came out in the pale moonlight,

Yes they did, yes they did.

And they danced as he played, it was charming,

‘Til he snarled alarmingly.

“What a big fuss, Mister Reymus,

You’ll not eat us in the moonlight,

For we’re off sirreee !

The circle skips round the fox, who mimes playing the chosen instrument.

Hens skip in the opposite direction.

Hens drop hands and fox shows his claws and snarls then points to a child. That child runs round the outside of the circle and attempts to get back to its place before being caught by fox.

If caught this child becomes the new fox and the old one joins the circle. The game begins again with fox playing a new instrument..

Owl hunts O

A song for autumn. Use claves to beat out the rhythm of the chorus.

Stand in a circle facing a partner.

One sharp beak and two round eyes,

Owl feathers flutter ready to fly.

Mousie squeaks; he sees owl soar,

Down with a swoop and through the barn door.

Too-whit-a-whit-a-whoo,

I’m going to catch you!

Too-whit-a-whit-a-whoo,

You won’t get away!

Owl that will never do,

You’re not going to catch me!

Farewell and toodle-oo,

This mousie won’t play!

Curve finger. Indicate two eyes.

Flap hands.

Fingers twitch like whiskers.

Hands cross and flap high and low.

Clap own hands then slap partners right, repeat clap and slap left hand.

Shake right finger.

Repeat clap and slaps.

Shake left finger.

Repeat above but on last two lines wave and stamp twice; then jump to make a half turn and face new partner.

Repeat sequence round the circle each time greeting the new partner with a smile – it comes naturally!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o! O

Make up your own rhyming verses to sing – the more unbelievable the better!

Learn this song well before trying it as a dance. Make animal noises with hands to the mouth so those with more sensitive ears are comfortable.

Make a circle holding hands.

There once was a sheep that snored in her sleep,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

In her dreams she drove a jeep,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Snored in her sleep? BAA! Drove a jeep? BAA!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

There once was a cow that danced with a sow,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Turned around and made a bow,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Danced with a sow? MOO! Made a bow? MOO!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

There once was a horse named Wilberforce,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Ate some gorse; he’s dead of course,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Wilberforce? NEIGH! Dead of course? No noise!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

There once was a pig in a purple wig,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

On tippy toes she danced a jig,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

In a purple wig? OINK! Danced a jig? OINK!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Last verse:

There once was a hen who could count to ten, Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Flew round the world and back again,

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Count to ten? CLUCK! Back again? CLUCK!

Whoopsy diddle dum a dandy-o!

Walk to the left.

Walk into the circle with hands raised and back with hands down. Walk to the right. Walk in and out of the circle as before.

Throw out hands then baa. Mime then baa.

Walk in and out of the circle as before.

Repeat pattern as above.

Each time on the fifth line shrug and throw out hands followed by the animal noise; next mime the action followed the animal noise or as below.

Dead of course – finger to lip and stand stock still

Count to ten – show ten fingers

Back again – walk round on the spot
